# Sierra alternatives when the work does not end in a resolved conversation

Sierra alternatives are worth a look when the work you want off your team has no clean ending, such as an account manager rebuilding a client's history before a call. A company whose customers arrive with requests that can be resolved and counted should pick Sierra, which prices mainly by that outcome.

## OCTYN and Sierra, side by side

| | OCTYN | Sierra |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How it starts | A mapping call, then a paid Consult that maps the work, measures a baseline and ends in one fixed quote. | Its pages point to a learn more link and promise deployment in weeks. What the first step involves, their site does not say. |
| Who does the work | The people who map the system build it and run it. | Your team, in Agent Studio or the Agent SDK, with Sierra's agent development team. |
| How it is priced | One fixed price for the build, in writing, after the Consult, then a monthly fee to run it. | By outcome, such as a resolved conversation, or by conversation count where that fits. Their site does not say the amounts. |
| After launch | OCTYN runs it and keeps it current, and sets it again when the company changes. | A long term partnership, it says, with Sierra refining the agent and its tools proposing changes for your team to review. |
| Who owns it | Your data, specs, configuration and code. | You own the memory layer, exportable to your warehouse. Who owns the agent itself, their site does not say. |
| Best for | An established company whose team does the same work by hand every week. | Businesses wanting an agent to deal with customers across voice, chat, email and WhatsApp, by its own account. |

A customer asking where their refund went is a conversation with an end. It gets resolved or it gets passed along, and somebody can count which. The account manager rereading three email threads before ringing a client on Thursday has no such ending, and **that is the difference to settle before comparing Sierra alternatives**. Sierra makes the same cut about its own pricing: [a June post](https://sierra.ai/blog/outcomemaxxing) says outcome pricing only works where the software is highly autonomous and highly attributable, and that an outcome nobody can cleanly tie to the software leads to an endless debate.

## Sierra, in its own words

[The home page](https://sierra.ai/) calls Sierra the leading conversational AI platform for businesses. Its agent [works across voice, chat, email and WhatsApp](https://sierra.ai/product) and connects to systems of record, so it can return an order or process an insurance claim. [Agent Studio](https://sierra.ai/product/agent-studio) lets customer experience teams build without code, while developers get [the Agent SDK](https://sierra.ai/product/agent-sdk). Past the single call, [Context Engine](https://sierra.ai/product/context-engine) ties every interaction to one person across channels, and [the services page](https://sierra.ai/industries/services) lists follow ups and reminders. On all of these pages, the person at the other end is a customer.

[The 2024 pricing post](https://sierra.ai/blog/outcome-based-pricing-for-ai-agents) sets out what you pay for, with the criteria for each outcome agreed upfront.

| What happens | What the post says |
|---|---|
| A support conversation resolved, a cancellation saved, an upsell | You pay for the outcome |
| The conversation stays unresolved, or gets escalated | In most cases, no charge |
| Routing or greeter style work | May suit paying by conversation count |

**What any of this costs, their site does not say.**

## How the alternatives differ

Support software with an agent added is the nearest swap. Sierra's pricing post suggests asking such vendors how far your seat bill will shrink, a rival's question worth asking anyway. Your own engineers are the second route, on Sierra's SDK or on something they write themselves, and **control comes with the upkeep**.

OCTYN is the third: **a system built around how one company runs, then run by the people who built it**. It suits the work between conversations, which rarely ends in anything a counter could claim. In [the outreach system OCTYN runs for an independent craft retailer](/casestudies/craft-retail-brand-sales), a rerouting step queued a cold first email to a third person at a company already in a live conversation. It was cancelled sixteen minutes before sending, and once anyone at a company answers, that company now belongs to the conversation. Nobody could invoice for that save as an outcome.

## When Sierra is the better choice

**Sierra is the better choice when customers keep arriving with requests that have a clear end**, such as a return, a claim or a booking. [Its trust page](https://sierra.ai/product/trust-and-reliability) lists SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI among its standards. Whether it takes smaller accounts, their site does not say.

**OCTYN is the wrong call when a product already does the job** and your team can run it. It is also wrong for a company too early to have an operation, and for a buyer choosing on price.

## How OCTYN works

OCTYN is an intelligent systems firm. Work begins with a mapping call and then [a paid Consult](/consult), which maps and measures the work as it runs today. It ends with **one fixed price for the build and one monthly fee to run it, in writing**, or with word that nothing is worth building. After launch the same people keep the system current. [The page on what a system gives back](/what-it-costs) counts the hours from your own numbers.

Those three threads will still be there on Thursday.
