# What counts as an operations system, and what doesn't?

An operations system takes over work a company's team repeats by hand. Requests, orders and documents are read as they arrive, routed by the company's own rules, and kept in one record the team can measure. It works inside limits drawn in the Consult: a read-only record stays unchanged, and a step marked for a person waits for them.

## Why it matters to you

The distinction that matters is which steps are marked for a person and which are not. A request, an order or a document is read into structure the moment it arrives, then routed by rules the company already uses, not rules invented from scratch.

Every item keeps one history as it moves, and what is stuck becomes visible against the baseline set at the Consult. A person still signs off the steps the company has marked as theirs; the system prepares the work and chases it, and never closes that step on its own.

This fits an established company whose team re-keys, chases and reports the same work every week. A company still settling its process is the wrong time to build one, because the system would lock in whatever process already exists.

## What it is not

An operations system is not a replacement for what a company already runs on. It reads from those systems and writes back to them, and takes over only the steps a person has agreed to hand it.
