# What is a product system?

A product system is the intelligence inside an application: it takes input from the product (voice, text or events), turns it into structured meaning, remembers each user, and decides and acts within set limits. It returns results through an API the product calls. OCTYN runs it after launch and re-sets it as models move.

Boundary: It acts only inside the limits the product team sets, and every action can be traced.

- **The situation**: Your product needs intelligence inside it.
- **What it is**: Systems your product runs on: voice, memory, decisions.
- **What changes**: Your team ships the product; the intelligence stays current.

## What it shows up as

Names you may already use for it. Each is one arrangement of the parts below, fitted to one company.

- Voice input that fills in the form: [see one](https://octyn.co/casestudies/voice-logging/demo)
- Say it, and it is logged: [see one](https://octyn.co/casestudies/mooney)
- Agentic features inside your product, within limits you set
- Search that understands what a user means
- Photos and documents read into data
- A product that remembers each user
- Or the one your product needs that has no name yet.

## What gets built

The parts every product system is made from. Which ones yours needs, and in what order, the Consult decides.

- **input**: Voice, text or events arrive from the product.

- **understand**: Each input is turned into structured meaning.

- **memory**: The system keeps context for each user.
- **decide and act (within the team’s limits)**: It decides and acts inside the product, within limits the product team sets.
- **return**: Results go back through the API or the interface.

- **kept current**: Tested and re-set as models move, while the product keeps running.

## Product systems, as built.

Each one is an instance of the flow above, fitted to one company.

- [Let customers log their day by speaking.](https://octyn.co/casestudies/voice-logging/demo) (Health coaching · product, Designed): A spoken note becomes structured entries the team can review, and the product can pull through an API.
- [Log an expense in the time it takes to say it.](https://octyn.co/casestudies/mooney) (Our own · Mooney, Running (our own)): One spoken sentence becomes a categorised transaction. The app is live on Google Play, and we run it.

## Fit

Signs it fits:

- Your product needs voice, memory or decisions inside it.
- You want it run and kept current after launch.
- Your team would rather ship the product than tune models.

Signs it is early:

- You only need a model API. Call the vendor directly.
- There is no product in users’ hands yet.
- You are comparing hourly rates.

Two or more signs that fit: book a mapping call. Early, or not sure: send the problem from the homepage form, and a person replies within two working days.

## Questions

- **Is this just a model API?**: No. A model is one part of it. A product system also turns input into structured meaning, keeps each user’s context, acts within limits you set, and is tested and kept current after launch.
- **Where does it run?**: Where your product needs it: on your infrastructure or ours, called through an API. Your data stays yours.
- **What happens when the models change?**: OCTYN tests the system against its baseline and re-sets it, so your product keeps working while the parts underneath it move.
