What is total cost of ownership for an AI system?
Total cost of ownership is everything the system costs over its life, not what it costs to start. For an AI system that means licences and their yearly increases, runtime and model spend, the hours somebody spends keeping it alive, the number of vendors you depend on, and what a change costs six months in.

Why it matters to you
Most comparisons stop at the first line and the buyer finds out about the rest in year two. The two that go missing are attention and cost to change, and they are usually the two that dominate.
Attention is hours, not money, and it is worth counting in hours first because that is the unit it is actually paid in. A batch pipeline somebody starts and watches is a different commitment from a service that runs unattended, and a shop that describes the first as the second is worth walking away from.
Cost to change is the one nobody quotes, because it means admitting that some requests are expensive. The useful version is four buckets: configuration, a contained code change, a large one, and a rebuild. Ask which bucket your three most likely changes land in.
